vasectomy realities 🧵

Time to dispel myths and talk realities, because if you can do this, you should strongly consider it.

I got my vasectomy about 17y ago, and welcome other, more recent stories.

* Got mine through Planned Parenthood. Sliding scale.
* The woman on phone heard I "only" had one kid and did spend 45s asking if I was sure. Then I said I was, and that was that.
* Two Vicodin, and maybe a local? I was awake, then maybe napped?
* Waiting before & after is the longest bit

vasectomy realities 🧵

* I still ejaculate. My ejaculate didn't notably change in any way, including volume.
* I think they used some sort of tiny clips to close all the snipped and newly-open ends. Every blue moon, they're in an uncomfortable position; a little jiggle sets things right.
* Every partner I ever had after, for 17 years, has acted (somewhat understandably) like they won a contest they hadn't even entered on hearing about it.

vasectomy realities 🧵

* I don't feel any less manly. I feel LIBERATED. I feel like a recent, clean STI panel (on both sides of the equation) leaves me ready to roll, pretty darn consequence-free.
* My long-term partners were able to stop THEIR birth-control efforts, which made them MUCH happier people. Nothing about uterine birth control is easy or pleasant.

Make a call. Take a day off work. Shirk lifting things for a time. If you look at it right, you're buying a lifetime theme park pass.

vasectomy realities 🧵

@thraeryn I've had one too if anyone wants to reach out with questions! Mine was a different technique though, no clips. I will recommend not going for local anaesthetic like I did though if anyone considering this gets that choice, I'd get knocked out instead if I could go back and change anything x

vasectomy realities 🧵

@thraeryn Very similar experience for me > 10 years ago. Small differences:

* I used a private provider.

* No questions or hesitation about my not having kids, but they did [appropriately] want to make sure it was 100% clear to me that I should consider the process irreversible because vasectomy reversals are not guaranteed to succeed.

vasectomy realities 🧵

@thraeryn
* I never notice the tubes, though I am aware of a tiny piece of scar tissue on the scrotum.

* I get around by bike, so there were a few weeks of having to take the bus everywhere while healing. So I deliberately scheduled mine for when we usually get the worst weather anyway. After that period, getting back on the bike was no trouble.

* That particular doctor gave every patient a little pocket knife as a memento, which made me chuckle.

vasectomy realities 🧵

@eldang ❤️❤️❤️❤️

vasectomy realities 🧵

@thraeryn every month my girlfriend is able to say, "I'm not pregnant. Again" makes my vasectomy worth it.

Funny anecdote: when I was having mine done, the doc and i just carried on, talking about my life at the time, full time traveling in an RV.
The only moment for pause was when I felt her tug on the vas deferens... all the way up to my ear.

vasectomy realities 🧵

@notcraig My doc asked before the procedure if I minded a nurse present, as she had little experience with 'em

So my doc was constantly describing his actions as he acted, and an extra person saw me loopy on whatever opioid

vasectomy realities 🧵

@thraeryn Vasectomy, with dadoctor's commentary track!

(Sorry that was a bit of a reach. It was funnier in my head)

vasectomy realities 🧵

@notcraig

All good; I had such a long day, my brain meats are responsive to almost all silliness

vasectomy realities 🧵

@thraeryn Pretty much same here.
I got mine about 22 years ago and there's been no discernible downside.

vasectomy realities 🧵

@thraeryn @vfrmedia mine was about 7 years ago and literally no downsides to it I can think of. Unknown at the time but 2 friends also had it done the same week as me with the same Dr. So there’s 1 person that has touched all our balls!

vasectomy realities 🧵

@thraeryn every once in a while I think about how my husband got one 5 years ago and I just feel so damn much better. It would be an amazing surprise if I were single and dating.

vasectomy realities 🧵

@thraeryn So there's no mysterious pent-up feeling at all?

Maybe "blue balls" is really "blue prostate"...

vasectomy realities 🧵

@tully

Heh, nah. Granted, I'm so many years out from the procedure itself that my memory has gaps,

and it never felt (to the best of my recollection) that anything was "storing up", never felt that I had a decreased or "missing piece" orgasm; all was as expected in the weeks after

re: vasectomy realities 🧵

@thraeryn How was your recovery? I've had a one friend who had such a bad reaction and intense swelling that I'm terrified of pulling the trigger.

Though I really want the operation. My 2 daughters are adults now and I have zero interest in starting over.

re: vasectomy realities 🧵

@petersanchez My recovery was simple and easy. No swelling I recall, no excruciating pain; I took the advice, didn't lift heavy things, etc and was fine.

I wonder what even happened with your friend. That's a bad reaction to a bananas simple procedure.

If it worries you and you can manage three days off work instead of one, that'd be my suggestion. Give yourself a long weekend.

re: re: vasectomy realities 🧵

@thraeryn Yea, my other friends say it was smooth. A few days with frozen veggies on your crotch and you're done. But it's always that one horror story that sticks in your mind. Thanks for the info!

btw, I actually had requested it 2 years ago but for some reason my provider was very backed up. By the time they called me to schedule the procedure (a year later) I was a week away from moving out of the country.

re: re: vasectomy realities 🧵

@petersanchez Wild. It's long ago now, but I think my wait time was more of the ~12d variety.

Like, the first (and few) things that come to mind as possible complications are "drug allergy" and "hematoma". I hope I'd know about the first already to inform the docs; the second happens to my dogs when they shake their heads too often and violently (ie, it's more a general, anytime possibility)

vasectomy realities 🧵

@thraeryn Australian experience, second hand. Less than 20 minutes from pants down to driving himself home. This wasn't recklessness, it was what the clinic recommended.

Less effort than buying condoms a couple of times.

vasectomy realities 🧵

@LovesTha @thraeryn

Nice to see people talk about #vasectomy !

I have first hand experience, from Germany (feel free to ask me stuff).

Funny thing: i was told 3 or more times that I may not drive myself afterwards, and I should make sure to have someone pock me up.

General info: I can confirm things are fine.
And it cost me ~500 €.

vasectomy realities 🧵

@thraeryn Around the same time ago.

Local only. It was the most painful aspect.

Tylenol and surgical glove of ice down my shorts off and on for a day or two.

After the healing period, there's been absolutely no change in my experience of sex, except I don't need condoms with someone I'm otherwise willing to fluid-bond with.

vasectomy realities 🧵

@thraeryn

My husband had his vasectomy about 5 years ago. His health insurance covered it. A slight swelling was taken care of with two applications of an ice pack the day after, & that was it! He says it was a great decision & that yes, "liberated" is exactly the right word!

re: vasectomy realities 🧵 VIDEO

@thraeryn What I wish I had been told: every guy who told me their experience told me "It's not so bad." And it's true, it's not so bad. BUT it is unpleasant. No pain, but an intense sensation of pressure, one side at a time, as they snip your vas deferens, then lots of tenderness for about two weeks after. Still, not so bad, you can take it, just don't expect to feel nothing. I actually found this video of the procedure really reassuring:

re: vasectomy realities 🧵 VIDEO

@Space_Burger_Steve Huh.

I legitimately don't remember the sensations, and the context is
* I was given two Vicodin, then I'm pretty sure a local also

The pressure you experienced made me think of my tooth removals. Have you had one? Were the feelings comparable?

re: vasectomy realities 🧵 VIDEO

@thraeryn No, I had all 4 wisdom teeth pulled at the same time, so I was out with a general anasthetic. The procedure I had was the one in the video, vas deferens pulled out and cauterised one at a time. I found the feeling of having vas deferens pulled similar to having a teste squeezed, and it was my vas deferens that was sore after. Still, it wasn't debilitating or unbearable, I was just surprised after all the downplaying I had heard.

vasectomy realities 🧵

@thraeryn My turn.
* Tried to get mine at 18. I've known I did not want children since I was 12. I was turned down because I was "too young to know".
* Tried again at 28, but found there was early medical literature about links between vasectomy and some forms of dementia. Waited out of an abundance of caution.
* Finally got it in my late 30s. With insurance, it was like $25 or something.
* Basically painless, took no calming or pain meds. My tattoo hurt worse. 1/2

vasectomy realities 🧵

@thraeryn
* Really, spent most of the surgery time just talking tech and the economics of medicine with the doc.
* Took like...one day working from home, skipped tea ceremony lessons for a week, no bike riding for 2 weeks. Bounced right back.
* Yep, sometimes the clips feel funny and one has to adjust. One always does, though.
* Me and my partner of many years had to rely on barrier protection until that point, so it was a huge relief.
* They should be free and on-demand.

vasectomy realities 🧵

@thraeryn I rode the subway home from my vasectomy (which is not recommended!) and probably due to effects of the local anesthetic fell over and hit my head on the stairs. I have a slight scar near my eyebrow that I refer to as my vasectomy scar
